OK, so we finally got the grenade bit. On one level, tremendous banter: Spider-Man memes, 'crazy I was in a senior position', Jeff Goldblum, meta-banter like the Laura K reference muting—great stuff. On the substance, though, he's describing failures at two levels; one, of large components of the state's public competence and responsibility, and another of the fecklessness, unseriousness and akrasia of elected representatives, and himself! (those last few links are to Alex Harrowell, whose blog you should all be reading). In conclusion:
