Review: Doctor Who: The Doctor’s Wife

It’s the Ood I feel sorry for. Seems like they can’t do anything without being possessed by some evil demonic force/sentient asteroid.

The End of Time Episode 1 is free on iTunes…

…apparently. In all honestly, I would very much recommend you not download it (unless you feel like you’re too cheerful, and want something to send you into a spiral of depression and despair). They repeated Episode 2 on BBC One the other afternoon, and I left it on out of morbid curiosity. It really is just as bad as I remembered. I’d forgotten about the whole ‘Dalton’s glove can do anything, except fire death beams with any degree of expediency outside of plot demands’ bit (and the fact that it was the Torchwood resurrection glove, respurposed.). Good grief, that episode was stupid. Don’t download it, people!
Review: Doctor Who: The Big Bang

It seems like years since I sat down to pen my review of the Eleventh Hour – Matt Smith still unproven as a Doctor, next to nothing known about Amy Pond, and the cracks in time a mystery. Now… well, things are different. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting… but it wasn’t what just happened. As for my full and frank opinion on what just happened, well, just click the link, but really, really spoilers from the start. Really really really. I mean it. If you haven’t watched the episode yet, don’t read further. Just don’t. Seriously, don’t.

Review: Doctor Who: The Pandorica Opens
Never ignore a coincidence. Unless you’re busy, in which case, always ignore a coincidence
There’s been something missing from this series of Doctor Who. A couple of things, actually. Beyond the odd glimpse here and there, special effects have been remarkably underused. Leaving aside the money shots in Victory, other than a few monsters, ships and a space whale, we haven’t had nearly as many special effects as usual. Loads of special-effect-light episodes – Amy’s Choice, Vincent and the Doctor, The Lodger… hell, even the Silurian two-parter didn’t really have that many. The other thing that’s been missing is good monsters. We’ve had the Angels, and… yeah, that’s pretty much it. Prisoner Zero, Power-ranger Daleks, fish-monsters, the stupid Silurians and the giant invisible turkey (and a hologram). So, this episode seems to remedy most of these deficiencies by having special effects every other cutaway and monsters up the wazoo. It looks like they decided to go all-out for the finale. Was it worth it? Click the link to find out!

Review: Doctor Who: The Lodger

Gareth Roberts, I apologise. Last week, I confidently predicted that I would loath this episode with a passion. I thought that given his past record of churning out that this episode would be the same. That the crowd-pleasing inclusion of Corden Bleu would be a senseless, irritating addition. How wrong I was. This was, despite a few issues, an entertaining, jolly romp. Just the sort of light relief needed before we plunge head-first into the high-octane thrills of the finale. Hit the link for my full review of The Lodger, and, as always, strong spoilers from the very beginning.

Review: Doctor Who: Vincent and the Doctor

This episode sees probably the most interesting guest writer this series, Richard Curtis, famed (if for some reason you’ve been avoiding television and film for the last few decades) for writing the funnier series of Blackadder, The Vicar of Dibley, Mr Bean, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, etc, etc – but his extensive back catalogue of comedic works has lead some to wonder whether he’s the right fit for Doctor Who. Wonder no longer- hit the jump for my review of Doctor Who: Vincent and the Doctor.
