Marenghitastic

YES! Victory is mine! After all that nonsense yesterday, my Steam account has been restored, and all is right with the world. Again, many thanks to David, who noticed that something was up and told me, and to the lovely people at Steam, Google and Lloyds TSB, who sorted out my issues extremely quickly.

I’ve read in a few places it’s the middle of the year. That was quick. Suppose it means I’ve been doing this One A Day for (almost) half a year – I started in the middle of January – and that’s pretty good. Let’s see if I can keep it going.

Oh, best thing about having done my piano exam? I’m done with those grade pieces, and I’m now learning this. Which is awesome.

I played a bit of Alan Wake at my friend Sean’s house the other day. I know I’ve said something to this effect before, but it really is Garth Marenghi : The Game, isn’t it? Read those manuscript pages back in your best Garth Marenghi voice, replacing ‘Brightfalls’ with ‘Romford’, and you wouldn’t be surprised to hear lines like “It was impossible to focus on it, as if it stood in a blind spot caused by a brain tumor or an eye disease” in Darkplace. The whole manuscript is collected here. It’s Marenghitastic.

That’s all for now, folks. Goodnight.

You can do loads in 12 minutes. Suck a mint, buy a sledge, have a fast bath…

here are some piano keys

So, after the epic Who-stravaganza of the last few days, I thought I’d bring it back to boring stuff that no-one cares about, because I hate page views (seriously, try blogging about Doctor Who when the next series rolls around – hits go through the roof!) I thought I’d do something very dull, and take up a bit less of your time this evening. Firstly, I changed the theme. Again. It’s a bit more minimalist, and I like the orange-and-white colour scheme. More irritatingly, I have hayfever, which is quite fantastically annoying. I also had a piano exam this morning: in summary, pieces, scales and exercises good, aural ok, sight-reading abysmal, though that could describe nearly every piano exam I’ve had for the last ten years. I’ve probably passed, but by what margin is the real question. In good news, my little brother has gone on some sort of Outward-Bound-like thing called Adventure with his school for the week, which means peace and quiet for a while. I’ll be bored with it by Friday, but it’s nice for a little while. If you want more Who, you could do a lot worse than reading what the fine folks of Behind the Sofa have to say on the subject. But for me, that’s it for the moment. If you haven’t already read my Doctor Who review (and additional stuff) (statistically speaking, however, you probably have), go and have a look at that. Goodnight, and see you tomorrow

Things I Forgot To Mention In My Review of Doctor Who: The Big Bang

So, there were a few things I forgot to mention in my review of The Big Bang. Consider this a review supplement.

Review: Doctor Who: The Big Bang

It seems like years since I sat down to pen my review of the Eleventh Hour – Matt Smith still unproven as a Doctor, next to nothing known about Amy Pond, and the cracks in time a mystery. Now… well, things are different. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting… but it wasn’t what just happened. As for my full and frank opinion on what just happened, well, just click the link, but really, really spoilers from the start. Really really really. I mean it. If you haven’t watched the episode yet, don’t read further. Just don’t. Seriously, don’t.

Several things CXVII

Yeah, it’s one of those days, I’m afraid. I’ve been at college, then playing some 360 with friends, so unfortunately I didn’t have the time to put into something substantial. Not that it really matters – Doctor Who series finale tomorrow, and that’ll be substantial. Of course, I’m then left with the problem of what to do on Saturdays now that Doctor Who has finished. Never mind.

1) Steam have started doing their summer deals. In certain ways, this is really good news, because it means cheap games. In other ways, I can see my money being drained away very, very fast.
2) I’m going to CERN in December! My maths teacher (who’s also a physics teacher) has arranged a trip, so I and several friends will be going to the place for particle physics research. I’m most worried about the flight – I’ve never been on the plane before, so I’m a little nervous.
3) This McSweeney’s monologue from the perspective of Comic Sans is very, very funny (if a little rude).

That’s all for tonight, I’m afraid. Tomorrow will be amazing. See you then!

Universities

So, my AS levels are now over, and A2s are looming on the horizon, but my most pressing issue at the moment is university open days. Despite my final exam being only last week, the universities somehow expect us to have found the time to book open day, taking time out of our learning to go and tramp around some nice buildings. Thankfully, most have some in September as well.

One of my problems is that I haven’t really got much of an idea about which university I want to go to. They all have pretty much the same stuff in their prospectuses – attractive people lounging in well-appointed rooms or in the sun-dappled shade of a mighty oak, or what have you, and lots of words about how great it is. ‘Really active student union’ and ‘refurbished buildings’ and ‘world-class research’ and the like. Thankfully, I want to do a physics degree, and there aren’t that many universities which offer it, and fewer that I want to go to. I had a list of 18, which I’ve managed to get down to 15 as of this evening. How I’m going to get further is anyone’s guess. Suppose I’ll go to some open days and see which ones I like. The course is obviously important as well, so I suppose I’ll be looking at the course content in a bit more detail.

In order that I might end with some brevity, here’s a man being funny about dinosaurs.

Over and out.

Podcasts You Should Be Listening To: The Dave Gorman Podcast

I’ve realised three things as I sat down to write my blog post today. Firstly, I haven’t done a podcast recommendation for a while. Secondly, most of the podcasts I’ve been listening to of late have been … well, the sort of stuff that I and very few others would want to listen to, and which you guys probably wouldn’t find terrifically interesting Thirdly, that in every previous podcast recommendation, I haven’t actually linked to the podcast in question. Sorry. That stops now. Anyway, as the title suggests, today’s podcast pick is from fantastic comedian and writer of such books as Are You Dave Gorman, and Dave Gorman’s Googlewhack Adventure. Let’s get started, shall we?

iOS4 and sundry

I downloaded iOS4 this morning. Unfortunately, I only have a puny 2G iPod Touch, so I can’t take advantage of the most exciting new feature, multi-tasking. I can’t even change the home screen background (for some reason). However, I’ve still managed to folder all my icons so they’re all neatly packed away on one screen. I’ve still got the nice reflective dock at the bottom. And I’ve still got iBooks. I wasn’t aware you had to download iBooks yourself, I assumed it was one of those things (like the voice recorder) which turned up in an update and couldn’t be deleted (what’s going on there? I’ve never had any call to use the Stocks app, but I’m still forced to have it on my device). I wasn’t really looking forward to it for books – I’ve got Stanza for that – but more for the PDF support. Yes, a rather circuitous way to get it, but still, it’s worth it in my opinion. I rather like iOS4, and everything seems to run a little faster.

In other news, A2 has begun afresh, but it’s ok, and while I…
…sorry. I fell asleep while writing that sentence. Guess I’d better head off and grease the wheels of learning with the grease of understanding. Or sleep. Goodnight!

I should really have learnt to plan this better by now

OK, from now on, I write my posts earlier, not immediately before I fall asleep. Maybe that way I might write something worth a damn, rather than the torrent of short, scrappy apologies like this one. It’s pretty much an admission of defeat, and I need to stop it. I’ve got some things I want to write about, but I’m a bit tired to do them justice, so for now, goodnight. For goodness’ sake.

Review: Doctor Who: The Pandorica Opens

Never ignore a coincidence. Unless you’re busy, in which case, always ignore a coincidence

There’s been something missing from this series of Doctor Who. A couple of things, actually. Beyond the odd glimpse here and there, special effects have been remarkably underused. Leaving aside the money shots in Victory, other than a few monsters, ships and a space whale, we haven’t had nearly as many special effects as usual. Loads of special-effect-light episodes – Amy’s Choice, Vincent and the Doctor, The Lodger… hell, even the Silurian two-parter didn’t really have that many. The other thing that’s been missing is good monsters. We’ve had the Angels, and… yeah, that’s pretty much it. Prisoner Zero, Power-ranger Daleks, fish-monsters, the stupid Silurians and the giant invisible turkey (and a hologram). So, this episode seems to remedy most of these deficiencies by having special effects every other cutaway and monsters up the wazoo. It looks like they decided to go all-out for the finale. Was it worth it? Click the link to find out!
